1. THE TEMPERATURE OF LITERATURE
What role can literature still play in an indifferent society that has other things on its mind than reading?
A complex and layered theme. The intention and task was to arrive at a simple, catchy image.
First sketches: using the title as a starting point, I looked for symbols to visualize writing and quickly arrived at an old-fashioned typewriter.
Proposal: Warm or cold? I sent these digitally colored sketches to the client.
Voorstel: Warm of koud?
Customer response: Let's do warm and preferably a female character
Right on! / Komt in orde!
2. WHO OWNS THE NORTH SEA
The North Sea is not only a source of relaxation, but also an economic activity.
Who keeps all these activities running smoothly?
Client suggestion: Perhaps a beachcomber who has gathered all sorts of things around him, and behind that, the immeasurable North Sea? A piece in the issue also features two beachcombers.
I could already picture this and it fits the subject well; I started doing some research and stumbled upon this fun character with a bicycle.

Digitally colored pencil sketch: Silhouette of a beachcomber, twilight, against the wind and weather.
All this in a somewhat bleak, melancholic 'Spilliaert' atmosphere. Oh yes, I quite like the Ostend painter Leon Spilliaert, with the fluttering red scarf also serving as a nod to his work 'Young Man with Red Scarf'. Not familiar with his work? Look him up!
Client feedback: Nice, but could it be a bit more colorful, more optimistic? That would make for a more attractive cover. I would also like a young character; that fits better with the young beachcombers featured in the article.
Alright then... I was initially a little disappointed; I was really looking forward to creating some melancholic atmosphere. But nevertheless I am very satisfied with the result!
