1. WRITER IN FRONT OF THE MIRROR
Briefing:
The autobiographical and the true story are currently experiencing a remarkable surge in Dutch-language literature. Non-fiction authors, too, are increasingly looking in the mirror and telling stories based on their own experiences, traumas, and family histories. This trend inspired us to dedicate a dossier to the role of the 'self' in literature.
Start: Due to circumstances—the client's assignment and briefing ended up in my spam folder, and this during a very busy period(!)—I had to create this cover very quickly, in a single evening. Fortunately, I had an idea quickly, and the theme wasn't too complex either.
Idea: Author greets diary/mirror, pen in hand.

Feedback: The sketch was approved! They asked to ad an addition of the outside world, as a contrast. I added the window with a busy city view.
Original: Pen drawing on postcard size. I like to draw small, which helps me to keep it simple.

Feedback: De schets was goedgekeurd!
Finished: Digital coloring
2. YOUR DIALECT LIVES ON (for a little while)
Briefing:
The Dutch and Flemish languages are very rich in dialects. In the past, there was a stigma surrounding regional languages. Today, we can speak of a renewed interest in dialect. This special issue takes a closer look at dialect.
A difficult start: A language issue... those are the hardest to visualize.
A tree with roots? A map? Something with speech bubbles? A research lab? Language confusion, misunderstanding: the Tower of Babel? Gerrit Callewaert (a comical character from a Flemish TV Show) with subtitles?
Idea: Pieter Coupé, the final editor and avid music lover, came up with this useful, ready-made idea.
An homage to this punk album cover.
Test tubes showing five different people who greet the reader
by saying ‘hello’, each in their own dialect: gouttendaaig / maisaai / moi / jow / aja
And off we go: Yes, that’s it. Thanks Pieter!

2. JOUW DIALECT LEEFT (nog even)
- Thanks for Watching! -
