This magazine brings context to art, language, history, literature and society in Flanders and the Netherlands, released every tree months as a thick book.

Dit magazine brengt context bij kunst, taal, geschiedenis, literatuur en samenleving in Vlaanderen en Nederland, uitgegeven elke drie maanden als een dik boek.
SWITI SRANAN 
Thematic dossier on Suriname on the occasion of fifty years of independence from the Netherlands.
The articles cover the ties between Suriname and the Netherlands and Flanders, as well as Surinamese art and culture. Not an easy theme; it is very broad, and I am not so familiair with it.
The process was also somewhat more difficult than usual.
Track: The 50th anniversary celebration takes us to the 1970s. I drew some inspiration from 60ies, 70ies illustrator Milton Glazer, this way of assembling an image. Through a montage image, I was able to bring various elements together.

Themadossier over Suriname naar aanleiding van de vijftig jaar onafhankelijkheid van Nederland. 
De artikels gaan over de banden tussen Suriname en Nederland en Vlaanderen en over de Surinaamse kunst en cultuur. Geen gemakkelijk thema dus; erg breed en ik ben er ook niet echt in thuis. 
Ook het proces was wat moeilijker dan gewoonlijk.
Piste: De viering van 50 jaar, brengt ons in de jaren '70. Ik liet me wat inspireren door 60ies, 70ies illustrator Milton Glazer, zijn manier van montagewijs samenstellen van een beeld. Via deze montagetechniek kon ik verschillende elementen samenbrengen.

Elements:
- The fantastic painting 'Man on a Terrace' (1930) -which I was not familiar with- by Nola Hatterman.
(A painting commissioned by Amstel Beer as an advertising poster. However, it was deemed unsuitable by the brewer due to the model's skin color.)
- The coat of arms of Suriname
- And a cool-looking 70s singer Lieve Hugo

Elementen: 
- Het fantastische schilderij 'Man op terras' (1930) -waar ik niet mee vertrouwd was- van Nola Hatterman.
(Een schilderij gemaakt in opdracht van Amstel Bier als reclameaffiche. Het werd door de bierbrouwer echter ongeschikt bevonden, vanwege de huidskleur van het model.)

- En een cool uitziende 70ies zanger Lieve Hugo

The client had a preference for a female singer or musician and suggested Sarah-Jane Wijdenbosch, who also appears in the file.

De klant had een voorkeur voor een vrouwelijke zangeres of muzikante en suggereerde Sarah-Jane Wijdenbosch die ook in het dossier voorkomt.

PROCESS: After spending primarily coloring digitally, I wanted to return to working on paper again. 
Gouache and colored pencils. But this made the corrections a bit more difficult in this case.

Maar dit maakte de correcties bij deze wat moeilijker.
PROCESS: The finer details, linework, and faces were added digitally. In a quest for looseness and control. And it also speeds things up more. The client wanted it a bit more festive, so I added Surinamese flags.

PROCES: De fijnere details, lijnwerk, gezichten, werden er digitaal aan toegevoegd. In een zoektocht naar losheid en controle. En schiet ook meer op zo. De klant wilde het nog iets feestelijker dus voegde ik Surinaamse vlaggetjes toe.
REJECTION
The client presented the cover to the Surinamese community in the Netherlands, and they were not pleased.
1. They felt that I had depicted the singer Sarah-Jane Wijdenbosch as unflattering and fat. I had not expected that reaction, since I see no problem with diverse shapes and weights; I find censoring or glossing over them more problematic. And I quite liked het nonchalant, streetwise attitude. But there was nothing I could do about it; it was a very sensitive matter, and it was certainly not our intention to offend the Surinamese community in their anniversary year... I repainted the singer and added her in.
2. Another taboo was alcohol. So I replaced the pint with water.

AFKEURING
De klant stelde de cover voor aan de Surinaams gemeenschap in Nederland en die waren niet tevreden.

Ik schilderde de zangeres opnieuw en voegde die digitaal toe.


PHILANTHROPY
Thematic dossier on philanthropy. This was also difficult to find an entry point for this one. 
Track: I thought of a magical scene with helping hands performing the works of mercy; clothing the naked, sheltering the homeless, feeding the hungry...

Themadossier over filantropie. Ook deze was moeilijk om een ingang te vinden.
Piste: Ik dacht aan een magische scene met helpende handen die de werken van barmhartigheid uitvoeren; naakte kleden, daklozen onderdak bieden, hongerigen voeden,...
RESPONSE: Nice image, but unclear what it is about, the client rightly noted. 
They suggested a reinterpretation of this print by Kathe Kollwitz. But less melancholic. 
Cool track; we were in the middle of winter, so I opted for a soft, colorful patchwork of clothing.

REACTIE: Aardig beeld maar onduidelijk waarover het gaat, merkte de klant terecht op. Ze stelden een herinterpretaite van deze prent van Kathe Kollwitz voor. Maar dan minder zwaarmoedig. Toffe piste, we waren midden in de winter, dus koos ik voor een zacht, kleurrijk lappendeken van kledij.
